Peru: Ministry of Health prepares to declare emergency in 13 regions due to dengue outbreak

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) will declare a public health emergency due to a significant increase in dengue cases and deaths following outbreaks in 13 districts and 59 districts of the country affected by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that carry the disease.
This measure is being implemented in Amazonas, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huanuco and Ica, Junin, Lambaeque, Loreto, Virgin, Piura, San Martin and Uque. It is carried out in Yali and other regions.
Key urgent actions include strengthening primary health care services and hospitals, disease surveillance, and prevention and health promotion activities involving communities, governments and strategic allies.
On this line, 24 clinical monitoring units (UVIKLIN) and 14 heating units (UV) will be installed in healthcare facilities and hospitals to provide care and rehabilitation for injured patients.
Larval control (destruction of mosquito eggs and larvae) and fumigation (destruction of adult mosquitoes) were also carried out in homes in 59 districts, as well as entomological surveillance and strengthening of dengue molecular diagnostic laboratories.
In addition, the participation of municipalities and community councils in campaigns to collect and destroy mosquito breeding sites such as tires, bottles, plastic containers or other objects that collect rainwater, as well as in mass communication campaigns in coordination with civil authorities to disseminate prevention will be encouraged. dengue fever in areas and control measures.
Notably, the country has recorded 11,585 cases of dengue and 16 deaths this year.
